If you want to sell products or services from your website, then you need to know about E-Commerce. E-Commerce, put simply, is the business of selling via the world wide web using an online store, or at the very least, an order form.
Shopping carts
Shopping carts allow you to sell products or services online. They provide functionality like browsing through the online catalogue for products, or searching by directly inputting product names into a search box, much like Google search. Shopping carts also provide features like the shopping cart/basket itself, some sort of checkout process, payment gateways, customer account section, and online admin back-end – for the store owner to add products and categories, processing customers orders, user/customer account mangement and alter the site-wide settings like currency, site name, store terms and conditions, privacy statements, contact details etc.
What is web hosting?
Web hosting is specially allocated space on a computer hard disk (measured in MegaBytes and GigaBytes), running a web server. The hosting company will setup a special folder, usually called ‘httpdocs’ or ‘public_html’ in which to upload your website. This directory will be mapped to your domain in the web server configuration files. This is usually setup automatically for you when you sign up for your hosting account.
Web hosting is usually available in the form of Linux or Windows hosting. This is dictated by what Operating System the web hosting company decides to offer you.
What is Colocation?
In short, Colocation is where you rent the space in a state-of-the-art DataCenter to house your own high-tech server equipment. Servers are normally of horizontal Rack Mount (19″ wide) configuration, unlike your average desktop that is a Tower system , and Colocation services are sold in ‘U’ or height Units, 1U being the absolute Minimum, 2U is 2 x 1U and so on. Usually the maximum in a full cabinet is 42U or therabouts. There are servers available in 1U height, such as the popular DELL R200 series.
A VPS is your own part of a complete server, but operates in the same way as would a dedicated server, but obviously with less disk-space, CPU power, RAM, etc. A VPS or Virtual Private Server maybe ideal for you if you’re a Developer or designer hosting lots of sites. A virtual private server is the cost-effective way to host multiple websites.
VPS usually include:
- Full root access (install what you want)
- Guaranteed memory and CPU time
Dedicated servers are for when you’ve outgrown your hosting package and/or want total control of the operating system and hosting control panel and billing software that you use.

Most dedicated servers are offered at a monthly rental fee, usually of £49.00 per month + vAT or higher. These servers will usually be from a reliable, trusted computer manufacturer such as DELL or HP, such as the DELL PowerEdge R200 and come with an operating system of your choice pre-installed. They may even come with a Control Panel pre-installed, or the server provider company will make a charge for installing the control panel
So you’ve got your website designed, your hosting account is active and you’ve uploaded your shiny new website to it. What next?
This is where most guides end, but I’m going the extra mile here
Getting traffic to your site
Your website will not be of much use if nobody knows about it so you have to submit it to as many search engines as possible.
Site promotion is not just about submitting your site to loads of search engines, we’ve all heard about getting our site onto the first page in Google right? Well not everyone can be on the first page, but, there’s hope.
If you’ve never done anything like this before, getting your website online can seem a daunting task. This may deter people from going ahead with a web site, which is a shame as a web site is a powerful business marketing tool and it can be fun to do.

Domain names are a means of giving a website an address on the world wide web.
How to register a domain name
You can easily register a domain name at any registrar on the web, like www.your-business-name.co.uk Simply pick a name you’d like as your domain, then visit the registrars site and enter the domain in the domain name search box. Their site will check for you if your domain name is available or whether it’s already taken. Unfortunately a lot of domain names are already taken now, as the web has been around for some 15 years or so since the first website appeard in 1994.
